Building Inclusive Narratives and Fostering Belonging
As a global community of communication professionals, IABC is committed to celebrating diversity and fostering a sense of inclusion, awareness, and belonging for all our members. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are not just abstract concepts to be acknowledged – they are practices to be lived by and integrated into our work and everyday interactions.
But, while we hold the power to elevate voices, foster understanding, and drive meaningful change by crafting stories that celebrate humanity, it is equally important to avoid certain narratives that may be harmful.
Embracing Ethical Storytelling
In an article entitled "Rethinking Giving Tuesday: How to Tell Stories That Empower, Not Stereotype” published recently by PRNewswire, the Immediate Past Chair of the DE&I Committee of IABC International, Matisse Hamel-Nellis, emphasizes the importance of the way stories are told, which matters almost as much as the stories themselves. “People aren’t just one-dimensional,” says Matisse. According to her, traditional narratives can fall into the "saviour" trap, where donors or organizations are portrayed as heroes, while equity-deserving individuals are positioned as passive recipients of aid. While this formula might evoke emotion, it risks perpetuating stereotypes, diminishing agency, and oversimplifying systemic challenges.
To move beyond this harmful narrative, Matisse suggests that communicators focus on highlighting the systemic barriers individuals face rather than defining them by their struggles.

Recognizing DEI Observances
DEI observances are another way to honour equity-deserving communities, raise awareness, and celebrate our shared humanity.
December invites us to reflect on Universal Human Rights Month, emphasizing the inherent dignity and equality of all people. This month also brings Hanukkah, a celebration of resilience and the triumph of light over darkness, and Christmas, a time for generosity, peace, and connection.
In January, the International Day of Education highlights the transformative power of education as a tool for fostering equity and opportunity around the globe. It is a reminder of our shared responsibility to create access to learning for all. The Lunar New Year, celebrated on January 29, 2025, marks a time of renewal, family gatherings, and hope for prosperity and harmony in the year ahead, uniting people across cultures with shared traditions.
February focuses on advancing understanding and equity. World Interfaith Harmony Week celebrates the power of dialogue and collaboration among diverse faiths, showing how shared values can unite us. On World Cancer Day, we come together to raise awareness, foster support, and inspire hope for a future free of cancer. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science highlights the vital contributions of women in STEM fields, underscoring the need for inclusivity in innovation. Finally, the World Day of Social Justice reminds us to address systemic inequities and advocate for fairness, dignity, and equality for all.
